The Advanced Math & Science Academy eighth-grader and Ashland resident was recently honored at a statewide awards ceremony for being among the best students in the nation.
The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth included Newberry among its 13,700 brightest young minds following a talent search of kids from more than 120 countries.
To win the honor, Newberry took the Scholastic Aptitude Test last year as a seventh-grader. He recalled scoring in the mid-600s in language and math and getting a 6 on his essay test. Students usually take the tests in their junior and senior year of high school. Most would be happy to get his scores.
