The Eastern Massachusetts Scouting for Food campaign is a massive food collection effort by those 5,000 youth and their leaders in the 21 communities in our council as well as many of the over 30,000 Scouts across the rest of Eastern Massachusetts. The Knox Trail Council leads the effort along with local businesses and media in a massive community food collection good turn.

The Scouting for Food campaign involves a door-to-door food collection effort by Scouts. On the first of two successive Saturdays, Scouts will distribute information door hangers throughout their designated area.  These ask residents to put out bags of non-perishable items the next week for collection.  The following Saturday the bags of food are collected and taken to local food pantries.  In 2015 the Eastern Massachusetts Scouting for Food effort collected over 500,000 pounds of food.  In 2016 the effort hopes to collect 750,000 and continue on our way to 1,000,000 pounds of food for local needy families.

Hunger is a problem we can do something about by working together.

Scouting for Food is a starting point.

It is an example of Scouting’s long-standing commitment to community service.

November 5, 2016 – door hanger distribution day

November 12, 2016 – food bag collection day

Scouting for Food is a great community service opportunity for the youth and families involved in Scouting.  For many of our Cub Scouts it is their first experience with community service. The collection effort makes a significant impact in stocking food pantry shelves with dry goods and other staples for needy families in their respective communities.

We could not have such a successful event without the support of our local community and business partners.  These partners help us provide door hangers, trucks, collection points, and more important supplies for the project.  They also help spread the word and some even collect non-perishables at their locations to help with the effort.  Look for these community partners this fall and thank them for us, they are helping make a positive difference in our community.
