Dear Knox Trail Council Scout Masters,

The historic John Adams Courthouse, located at One Pemberton Square in Boston and between the State House and Government Center, is the headquarters of the Massachusetts judicial branch.  This year we are reaching out to scouting organizations to make them aware of this free civic and field trip destination.  As a BSA merit badge counselor myself and now Director of Education and Public Programming for the Supreme Judicial Court, I wanted to  invite your troop to visit the John Adams Courthouse.

While the Courthouse is not open on weekends, we are open after school until 5:00 pm and we are open during school vacations and during the summer months.  We offer a 75 minute tour of the Courthouse, including a history of the building as well as a look at its art and architecture. Students will learn about both the Appeals Court and the Supreme Judicial Court(SJC), the oldest such court in the Western Hemisphere. Students will visit the courtrooms and when the court is in session can sit in on an Appeals or SJC case.  The tour also includes visits to two exhibit rooms. John Adams: Architect of American Government explores the central roles played by John Adams and the people of Massachusetts in creating a new system of government for a young nation. This exhibit also tells the fascinating and important story of the end of slavery in Massachusetts. Sacco and Vanzetti: Justice on Trial examines the notorious trial and executions of Italian anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti during the Red Scare of the 1920s. A special 14 panel exhibit, on loan from the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., will be on display from May through the summer months. Groups can also request a meeting with a Justice of the Appeals Court.
